The house that Qwikster built

Saturday, May 3rd, 2014

Yes, its true. This is the house that Qwikster built. We bought a very old home, 100 years old, in a mountain community outside of Los Gatos. Back in the day this area was reserved for city folks from San Francisco who wanted to rent a weekend cabin “in the mountains”. A few famous writers chose to call this place home, John Steinbeck owned land within walking distance. I don’t doubt for a second why he chose to call this place home. Its peaceful and wild and yet just minutes away from civilization. Huge, massive grizzly bears used to roam these hills. Now we have an occasional kitty cat and I am hoping we don’t see a big one anytime soon…

Stuff is happening. Solar panels are in. Windows are in, waiting on doors. Deck is started, waiting on wire mesh for the railing. Retaining wall is started, waiting on steps. Some plants are in. This next month we will see a lot of changes – fenced in garden area, siding, doors, 2 decks, new shed, more yardwork…

It’s all about deer resistant plants around here. We have already planted tons of lavender (ask me about sleeping in a lavender field in Provence)  and rosemary. Here we have rose stone, sweet pea butterfly, and society garlic. Everything a deer dislikes. Some mornings we wake up to 8+ deer on our lawn… We also have some native grasses coming in and olive trees. Our veggie garden area is bigger than we thought, so excited to get that started.

Our lower deck is in. Redwood with soon to be cattle wire railing which has been hard to find.

New windows! We had very flimsy single paned windows before that made me nervous being the helicopter parent that I am. Now we are insulated and safe. A huge relief!

We picked out a pretty stone for our retaining walls and stairs. The walls are Camaroon blocks and the stairs will be Camaroon flagstone. Brendan liked the look of very little mortar and after seeing it, I love the natural look, too!

Twenty-nine bottles of wine

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2014

Mountain Girl Winery may not have any mountain girls right now, but that doesn’t stop the winemaking process!

I sanitized, filled, and corked twenty-nine bottles which are now standing in the cellar. Tomorrow they get turned on their sides and sit for at least a month before they are ready for drinking.

Siphoning wine is not as tiresome as it sounds, though the wine doesn’t taste perfect yet. It requires some oxygenization in the bottle to be truly ready for drinking.

The bottles are not full because you need some space for the cork.

I rented this big heavy contrivance – the corker, from Fermentation Solutions, free of charge. It squashed the corks then pushed them down into the bottle. I am sure it made the job much easier. I only mangled one cork, which was lucky because I had 30, for 29 bottles.

Mountain Girl Winery?

Sunday, March 9th, 2014

We are testing our first batch of wine before we make the big commitment of planting a bunch of vines. Brendan bought me a wine making kit for Valentine’s Day… So cute. I came home on V-day and Page rushed out to meet me at the car. “Mom, Mom, hearts, hearts!” Page and Brendan had laid a trail of hearts that led from the car to the downstairs bathroom where a ton of wine making equipment was awaiting. We dove into the science experiment last night and produced our first batch of Pinot Grigio. In a couple months we will find out how well we fared.

What do you like better… Mountain Girl Winery, Shady Vines, Sierra Azul Vineyards…

The septic tank is in and now we can start planning the landscaping.

Page was excited because she nows has a stage! This area will be where we fence in our veggie garden. Above this area will be the two new decks going in.

Where Brendan and Page are standing will be the veggie garden, underneath that we will have a play area with grass. We are removing the existing decks off the house and adding in 2 new decks.

This is our lower yard where we will add a jungle gym, picnic table and a trampoline.

Which way do you want to go Page?

Friday, March 7th, 2014

Maybe in Colorado people wouldn’t look at me funny for pushing a stroller uphill with Page sleeping inside and then also carrying Sienna in the Baby Bjorn. But here in Los Gatos, they look at me funny… It only lasted about 10 minutes and Page woke up ready to ride her bike which was the original goal. She is so fun to watch cruise up and down the trails on her Strider. “Which way do you want to go Page?” “Left!”

Exterior work has begun!

Wednesday, March 5th, 2014

Ya! Finally we are started on our renovation adventure. First off we are working on getting a new septic system in. After that we are having the earth movers flatten out the land so we can add a grassy area for the girls to play and a veggie garden. Down below we will flatten out that area a little more and will be another play area for the kids under the oaks. Hoping to get a jungle gym, swings and trampoline down there. In between that area on the existing slope we are hoping to plant some vines. We’ll see!

Here are some before photos…

Love Bug Version 2.0

Monday, February 10th, 2014

Its that time of year again! Valentine’s cards!

We went a little over board last year with the Love Bugs, but we wanted to stay with the same theme so we toned down our ambition and created something a little more doable. So fun and Page got some great practice in writing her name on the cards.

Pixie Dust

Monday, February 10th, 2014

The other day Page wanted to go to the Princess Store and get some pixie dust so that she and I could fly over to Nick’s house. So I took her to the store, we bought the pixie dust and we both took turns dusting each other and Page thought for a minute, “Mom, nothing is happening. We aren’t flying.” We tried to prep her that pixie dust was just pretend, but it was the saddest thing ever to watch her realize that pixie dust was not real.

She is now convinced that there is a store in San Francisco sells the REAL pixie dust.

To get some flying action in, we went to see the play Peter Pan, she just loves theater. Here we are waiting for the show to begin!

Pagie’s Big Climb

Thursday, January 30th, 2014

I set off with the double stroller today to climb St Joseph’s Hill but Page was a super sport and decided she wanted to hike the whole way up. Its a big climb and I am so proud of her. She walked (and talked) the whole way up… And she was definitely the most stylish!
